Common Cents: Personal Money Management Workshop

Posted by Robyn on February 17, 2009

The Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change at the University of Memphis (http://benhooks.memphis.edu) is recruiting adults to attend the workshop, Common Cents: A Personal Money Management Workshop developed and taught by The RISE (Responsibility, Initiative, Solutions, and Empowerment) Foundation.  The class will be held on the University of Memphis campus Thursdays from March 5 through April 9, 2008 from 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m..  Registrants will be notified of the specific room location one week prior to the first class.  Classes meet one hour each week for six weeks.

The Hooks Institute’s mission includes preserving the history of the American Civil Rights Movement and social, economic and health justice.  RISE is an organization whose mission is to empower low-income residents of Memphis and Shelby County to build and sustain assets.   The Hooks Institute and RISE have partnered to bring this course to Memphis residents.

The Common Cents workshop includes modules on:

1) Money Attitudes: What Role Does Money Play in Your Life?
2) Laying the Foundation with a Spending Plan
3) Banking Principles
4) Understanding Your Credit Report
5) Managing Credit
6) Retirement: Preparing for the Future
7) Are You Ready to Buy a Home?

Individuals completing the Common Cents class will be considered for enrollment in RISE’s  SAVE UP program.  RISE will determine individual’s eligibility for SAVE UP.  Under SAVE UP, for every dollar saved by an individual, up to $1,000, RISE will match with two dollars, up to $2,000, for a total savings for the individual of $3,000. The $3,000 can be used for a down payment on a home by a first-time homeowner, for a car, or to purchase a personal computer.  RISE has specific qualifying criteria including income restrictions for SAVE UP.

This is an exciting opportunity for individuals to evaluate their spending, budgeting and other financial habits and to begin saving. To sign up for the Spring 2009 workshop, please complete an enrollment form found at http://benhooks.memphis.edu/programs.html, or contact The Hooks Institute  at 678-3974 for an enrollment form.
