College Fair at Central Library 11/5/10

CSI: College Survival Information Fair Targets HS Seniors

Navigating admissions, finding financial aid, and managing newly-found freedom, college is like the survival of the fittest. But high school students can get a crash course in higher education at the College Survival Information Fair or CSI. The event will be held from 10:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 5, 2010 at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library (3030 Poplar).

A list of Memphis-area colleges will attend the Fair to teach students everything from how to complete college applications and seek scholarships to how to eat healthy and manage extracurricular activities. The Library will also provide information on writing college essays.

Event coordinator and Asst. Library Communications Director Stephanie Jones says the event will help students to plan ahead. “Many times the next step in life is not real until we see a glimpse of it. For many students, college seems so far away, so preparation for college is put off or not deemed as a priority among proms, senior trips, and exams. This will be an opportunity for students to exhibit some responsibility for that next step,” Jones said.

The focus of the Fair is to retain Memphis talent by exposing rising college students to local opportunities and preparing students to take advantage of them. “We want to provide [students] with all the equipment they need to survive in college,” Jones said.

A partnership between the Memphis Public Library & Information Center and Memphis Talent Dividend, CSI is a part of Leadership Memphis’ 100 Things in 100 Days, a college-attainment initiative to boost the number of people with college degrees in the Memphis Metro area.

For more information on the College Survival Information Fair, call (901) 415-2847.

College Collage 8/13/10 @ Central Library

On Friday, August 13, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library will host a non-traditional college fair called College Collage.

The fair has one major goal: encouraging adults who have started post-secondary education—but not finished their coursework—to return to school and obtain their degree/certificate.

Fair attendees will get the chance to meet with school recruiters and learn about financial aid opportunities.

Tuition-Free Colleges

BusinessWeek did this story on tuition-free colleges.  The article is pretty interesting, but you can always skip to the list of schools.
