WIN Tips – Make The Most Out of Your Career Fair Experience

WIN logoWIN-TIPS – Job Search Tips

Make The Most Out of Your Career Fair Experience.

JobLINC Career Fair-July 25, 2013

Career Fair success lies in effective preparation, and communication. Make sure to research the employers you want to visit: learn about them, the positions they’re looking to fill, and what type of candidates they’re looking for.

Tip:  Arrive with a positive   attitude

Have your 30 second commercial or “elevator speech”   ready.  Don’t forget to network with other Job Seekers attending the   Career Fair, they may become good networking contacts, so get their contact   information to follow up at a later date.

Tip:  Bring several clean,   un-frayed copies of your resume.  Or, take the approach to get a   business card and email your resume to the recruiting individual.

Fact: Employers only look at resumes an average of 10 seconds. Make   sure you’re leaving employers with the impression – Hire Me! Do not approach   the Company representative with resume in out-stretched hand.  Approach,   introduce yourself, learn what types of positions they are recruiting for and   have some discussion about your qualifications if appropriate.  Allow   the Company representative to ask for your resume, and offer to send a copy   electronically.

Tip:  Do your research!

The more you know about a company, the more you can converse   with the company representative and the more memorable you will be.  If   there is a line to their table, circulate around to others to let the crowd   die down if possible and work your way back to their location.

Tip:  Get the interviewer’s   business card.

If you are called for an interview, you will want to follow up   with a letter that reinforces the points you made and the facts you learned.

Tip:  Maximize, Maximize, Maximize!

The lines might be daunting but don’t fail to maximize this   opportunity. Talk to every company that fits your experience and ambitions.   If you meet with 20 recruiters or hiring managers, at the end of the day you   will know 20 people by name. That sure beats sending a blind resume to   “Human Resources Director.”

Tip:  Plan a few key questions!

Be ready to ask intelligent questions like asking how your   skills might be utilized within the framework of the company and by asking   questions about relevant news within that organization. Make sure to ask the   recruiter what he or she likes best about the corporate culture to better   assess if that company is right for you.

Tip:  Wear Proper Business Attire

First impressions count!  Business dress, clean and   pressed, is always appropriate, limited jewelry, polished shoes, clean and   neatly manicured hands, little to no perfume (some are sensitive to   scents)…if you are a smoker, do not smoke before the Career Fair, but if you   must, wash hands and brush your teeth to freshen your breath before   entering.  Smile!

Tip:  After the Career Fair

Make notes during or immediately after the Career Fair   regarding any conversations upon which you may need to follow up.  Write   thank you notes and/or send resumes to anyone with whom you had conversations   relative to a position with their Company.
