Desoto County Area Job Fair, Tuesday, October 8, 2013 9:30 – 2

The Governor’s Job Fair Network and DeSoto County WIN Job Center will host the DeSoto County Area Job Fair on Tuesday, October 8, at the Desoto County Landers Center, 4560 Venture Drive, in Southaven. 

Representatives from nearly 50 companies, educational organizations, training providers and companies offering entrepreneurial opportunities will be on hand to connect with people looking for jobs.  The doors will open early for our Military Veterans at 9:00 AM, and to the public at 9:30 AM. 

Businesses with positions to fill will accept resumes and conduct on-site interviews; educational and training institutions will provide information on their services; and entrepreneurial organizations will provide information about their opportunities. 

Last year over 2,600 applicants attended the DeSoto County Area Job Fair and more than 500 job seekers received job offers contingent on further interviews and or further testing the day of the event.

POSITION:     WATER TREATMENT PLANT CHEMIST – (1 Opening)  SALARY:  $42,120.00 – $64,022.40  BI-WEEKLY:  $1,620.00 – $2,462.40.00      Public Works/Stiles/North Plant     J.O. #13-161

 

JOB SUMMARY:  Works under the direction of the Wastewater Treatment Plant manager or assigned manager.   Plans and directs activities of the laboratory in the waste treatment plant to determine efficiency of plant processes and to ensure that plant effluent meet regulatory requirements.  Supervises lower level chemist and technicians by providing work direction, assignment of duties, training, and discipline; reviews reports and testing data to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.  Identifies problems and supervises corrective action.  Develops new or modifies existing procedures for use of equipment and analyzing samples.  Conducts laboratory analysis requiring advanced training and significant data interpretation.  Ensures that appropriate safety procedures are applied relative to laboratory equipment and materials.  Prepares reports and technical papers.  Interprets results of laboratory activities and provides technical advice and counsel to management and other professionals.  Monitors laboratory expenditures and prepares bid and contract specifications.  Maintains supplies through inventory and purchasing procedures; and monitors and records employee attendance.  Updates and monitors the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) by accurately tracking and maintaining data throughout the testing lifecycle and ensuring scheduled testing is initiated within the test period.

 

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

 

1.   Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.

 

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Requires manual dexterity to use laboratory equipment and ability to operate personal computer.  Must be able to identify colors and distinguish odors.  Requires ability to communicate with staff, management, sales representatives, and federal and state agencies.

 

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:  Majority of work is performed in an office or laboratory setting.  May be exposed to chemicals and cleaning solvents.  Requires the use and wear of protective gear when necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Bachelors degree in Chemistry or closely related field and four (4) years experience in applying chemical analytical techniques with two (2) of the four (4) years supervising laboratory activities; or any combination of experience and training which enables one to perform the essential job functions.

 

 

 

POSITION:     MAINTENANCE FOREMAN – (1 Opening)  ANNUAL SALARY:  $31,220.80  – $46,508.80;  BI-WEEKLY:  $1,200.80 – $1,788.80     Public Works/Street Maintenance/Asphalt         J.O. #13-160

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:  Works under the general supervision of a field supervisor in the Public Works Division.  Directs a small crew responsible for repairing and maintaining storm drains, inlets and other structures relating to drain maintenance.  Instructs crew on how to complete assignment, what equipment and materials to use.  Drives truck to haul crew, materials and equipment.  Performs routine check of equipment, checks fluid, and fuels truck.  Maintains and keeps payroll time sheets.  Reviews work performance and recommends disciplinary action.  Communicates with residents regarding work being performed.  Uses mobile radio to communicate with supervisor and other workers.  Travels to various facilities to conduct on-site inspections.

 

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

1.       Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.

 

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Must be able to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing. Requires traversing on uneven ground lifting and carrying objects such as tools and power equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. as well as the handling of manhole covers and inlet grates (approximately 150 lbs.) with assistance. Requires bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching (including above head), standing, walking, pushing, pulling, and lifting.  Requires the ability to climb in and out of manholes, catch basins, culverts, and other confined related structures.  Requires the ability to operate assigned equipment.  Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.  Must be able to operate a computer and various office equipment.  Requires the use of mobile handheld radio and communication with personnel in the field.

 

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Majority of work is performed outdoors exposed to odors, dust, inclement weather and traffic.  Frequently drives to various locations to inspect and monitor crews in the completion of working duties.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  High school graduate and five (5) years’ experience in construction/repair of sewer/drain systems; or any combination of experience and training which enables one to perform the essential job functions.  Must possess and maintain a valid Class “B” Tennessee (or equivalent out-of-state) Commercial Driver’s License and must comply with Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) Alcohol and Drug testing rules as a condition of continued employment.  Supervisory experience preferred.

Mentor Coordinator – Desoto Youth Court

DeSoto County Youth Court, on behalf of VISTA, is currently seeking applicants for the Full Time Position of Mentor Coordinator.  Interested candidates must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in any given field.
The Mentor Coordinator will be responsible for the following:
  • Recruit qualified mentors
  • Train mentors/mentees
  • Conduct Background checks, perform face to face interviews,  and review references for potential mentors
  • Pair Mentors with Mentees
  • Assist mentors/mentees/parents or guardians of mentees with any issues that may arise
  • Keep any records that may be required for AmeriCorps*Vista
  • Assist the mentors/mentees with any barriers that may arise (i.e. facilitating discussions between the school, parent, child, and mentor; directing the mentee family to local programs that may assist with needs, etc.)

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in an office environment.  May occasionally require working outdoors. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree and two (2) years experience in fleet maintenance/procurement with one (1) of the two years in a supervisory and/or lead capacity; or any combination of experience or training which enables one to perform the essential job functions.  Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:  Works under the supervision of a maintenance foreman in the Public Works Division.  Performs skilled manual work in the repair and maintenance of the City’s sanitary sewer system: Lays pipe of various sizes and configurations; makes tie-in to structure, outfall lines or interceptor lines; applies cement or mortar to pipe to reconstruct pipe or seal cracks, sometimes from inside the underground pipe; clears around pipe to make repairs; and signals equipment operators to facilitate alignment to remove pipe; and drives tandem dump truck and crew cab to transport materials to and from job site.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Requires walking, sometimes across ditches, climbing, crouching and ability to crawl into pipes.  Requires ability to lift tools and materials and to operate hand tools.  Requires ability to operate equipment. 

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Majority of work is performed outdoors exposed to changing weather conditions and temperatures.  May be exposed to traffic.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Ability to understand written and verbal instructions and six (6) months experience in construction and maintenance or related area.  Must be able to mix and apply concrete. Must possess a valid Class “B” Tennessee Commercial Driver’s License and must comply with Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) Alcohol and Drug testing rules.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:  Works under the direction of an assigned supervisor in the overall maintenance of grounds and turf of City golf courses. Supervises, coordinates, instructs, and evaluates the work of subordinates engaged in all aspects of turf management, including irrigation, fertilization, dispensing and mixing chemicals, and in the use of turf equipment. Reviews work performed by contractors. Assists in plant selection for grounds.  Assists in the preparation of department budget. Orders supplies in line with approved budgets. Maintains records of daily work activities. Plans and develops procedures, materials, and safety standards applicable to the care and maintenance of golf courses, including utilizing knowledge of turf diseases, pesticides, mixing chemicals, and safety methods. Develops and organizes techniques used in the care and maintenance of turf, shrubs, trees, and other greenery.  Maintains soil treatments used to establish conditions conducive to the healthy growth of grass and other plants.  Establishes priorities of equipment repair. Oversees the equipment maintenance programs. Exercises cost control measures to keep operating and capital expenses in line with approved budgets.  Operates and maintains the equipment and tools used including turf equipment, tractor with attachments, irrigating systems, and high pressure pumps. Inspect and monitors overall turf condition of course to determine need for supplemental irrigation or fertilization.  Develops maintenance schedule for the golf course. Provides work direction, assignment of duties, evaluation of work performance, and discipline for assigned personnel through constructive and cooperative working relationships. Creates and prepares a variety of correspondence, memoranda, and reports by utilizing various computer applications. Interacts and communicates verbally and in writing with general public, vendors, contractors, government agencies, management, and other staff members on a variety of issues and concerns.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Requires ability to inspect golf course and to operate equipment used in maintaining a golf course such as mowers, tractor with attachments, etc.  Requires lifting (approx. 50 lbs), reaching, climbing ladders, stooping, kneeling, bending, and crouching for long periods of time. Requires the ability to traverse uneven ground to visually inspect property.  Must be able to communicate with staff, management, vendors and outside contractors. 

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:  Majority of work is performed outdoors and may be exposed to noise, dust, and chemicals. May be exposed to various weather conditions. May be required to work weekends. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  High school graduate or GED and six (6) years ground maintenance experience to include three (3) years in maintenance of golf courses, with one (1) of the six (6) years in a supervisory/lead capacity; or any combination of training and experience which enables one to perform the essential job functions.  Must possess a Tennessee pesticide and herbicide applicator certification, or ability to obtain certification before the end of 12 months of employment as a Golf Parks Foreman.  May be required to complete a job-related assessment as determined by Human Resources. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License as a condition of continued employment.

 

POSITION:    OPERATIONS & MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR – (1 Opening)  ANNUAL SALARY:  $37,939.20  – $57,283.20;  BI-WEEKLY:  $1,459.20 – $1,203.20     Public Works/Maxson Plant     J.O. #13-157 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:  Works under the general supervision of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operations Supervisor.  Responsible for first-line supervision of activities of workers on an assigned shift engaged in operating and maintaining equipment in the wastewater facility to insure continuous and efficient operation to meet federal, state and city guidelines.  Oversees personnel on assigned shift providing training, work direction, assignment of duties, and administers discipline.  Makes regular inspections of facility to detect malfunctions and needed maintenance of equipment, buildings, and grounds.  Interprets computer, meter and gage readings.  Initiates appropriate action when problems are detected.  Maintains daily log of operation activities.  Monitors employee attendance and maintains time sheets. 

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Must be able to read meters and gages.  Must be able to lift bags of materials, such as lime, sandblasting, and fertilizer (approx. 75 lbs.). Requires extensive walking sometimes over uneven ground and ditches.  Requires ability to climb ladders and stairs. 

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:  Twenty-four hour, seven-day-week operation; must work assigned shift.  Majority of work is performed outdoors.  May be exposed to dust, fumes, odors, noise, heat and all types of weather conditions. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  High school graduate and five (5) years experience in operating and/or maintaining machinery and equipment similar to that used in large volume wastewater treatment plants with one of the five (5) in a supervisory/lead capacity preferred; or any combination of experience and training which enables one to perform essential job functions.  State of Tennessee Class III or IV Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification preferred.

POSITION:     MUSIC COMMISSION SPECIALIST – (1 Opening)  ANNUAL SALARY:  $31,220.80  – $46,508.80;  BI-WEEKLY:  $1,200.80 – $1,788.80     Parks & Neighborhoods/Music Commission     J.O. #13-156 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Works under the direction of the Executive Director of the Memphis Music Commission (MMC) to perform specialized support functions for the service unit. Solicits, coordinates, and schedules volunteers and financial and in-kind sponsors for MMC special projects/events. Coordinates and oversees ticket sales and distribution of fliers, posters, press releases, etc. related to MMC events. Encourages participation by maintaining contact with local vendors to feature Memphis Music artists in local advertisements, events and programs. Contacts vendors for operational needs (video production, instruments, promotional items, etc.) and sponsorship for MMC events. Performs basic data entry of client/vendor contact information into the computer database. Maintains a log of Memphis Music artists and financial and in-kind sponsor’s contact information. Prepares bills and invoices, as well as budgetary and progress reports related to MMC operations, as directed. Maintains petty cash funds and receipts. Researches current topics and formats scripts for MMC television show, schedules and confirms guests for 30 minute cable television show appearances and music forums, and serves as point of contact for guests. Maintains MMC Social media presence utilizing outlets such as FaceBook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Schedules appointments and confirms room reservations for Memphis Music Legal Clinic meetings and other planned seminars and programs. TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in an office environment and at local music and/or music related events that occur during evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.  Some work may be performed outside assisting with special projects/events or meetings, which may include exposure to dust, odors, noise, heat, and various weather conditions. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or related discipline and one (1) year of professional administrative experience involving community events/projects; or any combination of experience and training which enables one to perform the essential job functions. Knowledge of Memphis Music industry past and present preferred.
