Home for the Holidays: Housing & Economic Empowerment Collaborative

Home for the Holidays to focus on Financial, physical health, foreclosure prevention

Shelby County Trustee David Lenoir and the Memphis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. have partnered again to present the free foreclosure prevention and financial counseling event.

This year’s Home for the Holidays: A Housing and Economic Empowerment Collaborative is Saturday, Nov. 23.  The six-hour event will feature a small business resource center, legal clinic, a Homebuyer’s Corner with expertise from lenders, Realtors and housing agencies and the Shelby County Trustee’s Project H.O.M.E. financial literacy and budgeting workshop.

Home for the Holidays returns to the Hickory Ridge Towne Center, formerly known as the Hickory Ridge Mall, said Vanecia Belser Kimbrow, Social Action Chair for the Memphis Alumnae Chapter of the national public service sorority. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the event concludes at 2:30 p.m.

“As the market and economy have started to stabilized, we wanted to make ‘Home for the Holidays’ an event focused on providing important information and tools to businesses and homeowners for not only their financial health but physical health, too,” said Kimbrow.

Topics will focus on homeownership financing, foreclosure and tax sale prevention and WISE Teens Youth Revue forum. Health screenings and eating tips will also be offered. The JobLINC Mobile Job & Career Center &  Affordable Care Act counselors will also be on site.

“Building an economically healthy community requires healthy habits,” said Trustee David Lenoir. “People in good physical and financial shape are better prepared for life’s hurdles.”

Loan servicers and banks participating in this year’s event include, Wells Fargo Home Mortgage Regions Bank, Tri-State Bank, Magna Bank and Citizens Bank. More than 20 participating partners will be on hand, including the Memphis Area Legal Services, Black Business Association, United Housing Inc., Financial Counselors of America, the Shelby County Health Department, RISE, Seedco and the Memphis HUD office.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Works under the general direction of an assigned supervisor at the Memphis Animal Shelter to provide basic clerical support and routine care for sheltered animals, maintenance of the shelter, and service to customers. Cleans kennels, cages, and pens where animals are housed. Cleans, bathes, and dips animals as directed. Performs humane euthanasia. Records paperwork on diagnostic procedures performed, such as surgical procedures, health screening programs, etc. Inputs data of adopted animals, adopted returned animals, and animal impoundment into the computer system. Feeds, waters, and medicates animals. Assists in the training of new personnel by answering questions, demonstrating animal care techniques. and sharing knowledge of departmental policies. Assists the public in locating and redeeming lost pets and providing information on pet adoption and redemption procedures. Cleans and maintains office, grounds, restrooms, and other shelter facilities using pressurized steam cleaning equipment and chemicals. 

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

1.   Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.  

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing. Requires the ability to operate general office equipment, such as a computer and telephone. Also requires the ability to use equipment, such as hoses and ladders, to clean, lift, and handle incoming animals, such as dogs, cats, raccoons, etc.  Must be able to lift fifty (50) pounds. Constant lifting, standing, and traversing shelter grounds required.  

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in an animal shelter environment. Frequent exposure to noise, fumes, and unpleasant surrounding.  Involves contact with staff, visitors, and the general public.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School education or equivalent and one (1) year of work experience in animal care preferred; or any combination of experience or training which enables one to perform the essential job functions. Basic computer and typing skills preferred. Must obtain and maintain a certification as a Certified Animal Euthanasia Technician within one year of employment, as a condition of continued employment.

POSITION:     ANIMAL CARE OFFICER – (1 Opening)  ANNUAL SALARY:  $39,145.60;  BI-WEEKLY:  $1,505.60     Parks & Neighborhoods/Animal Shelter          J.O. #13-207 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Works under the general supervision of an assigned supervisor at Memphis Animal Services to apprehend, rescue and retain unlicensed, stray, and uncontrolled animals for the protection of citizens. Investigates complaints concerning ordinance violations; answers calls concerning reports of animal bites. Assists in the training of new personnel. Performs euthanasia as required, both within the shelter and in the field. Provides information and assistance to the public. Operates a City vehicle to respond to calls concerning the need to apprehend unlicensed, stray, and uncontrolled animals. Makes court appearances related to citations and warrants issued and to apprehend animals. Acts as liaison with the Memphis Police Department, Shelby County Sheriff Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Internal Revenue Services (IRS). Maintains and completes a variety of daily activity reports. Assists other personnel in the performance of these duties. 

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

1.   Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.

 TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing. Requires the use of equipment such as traps, chemical capture gun, nets, catchpoles, etc. Requires the ability to handle animals coming into the shelter such as dogs, cats, snakes, livestock and wildlife.  Requires running and lifting of animals (up to approximately 50 lbs.). Requires operating a City vehicle to make on-site visits to apprehend, rescue, and retain animals. 

 TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Majority of work is performed outdoors. May be exposed to potentially dangerous animals and various types of weather conditions. Involves contact with staff and the general public. Occasionally travels to meet court appearances.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School graduate or GED and two (2) years of general work experience, preferably in the animal control or animal care field, including some direct experience working with the public; or any combination of experience or training which enables one to perform the essential job functions.  Good communication skills and experience working independently preferred. Must possess a valid driver license. Must obtain and maintain a certification as a Certified Animal Euthanasia Technician within one year of employment, as a condition of continued employment.          

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be available to work on assigned shift including working on second (2nd) shift as needed as a condition of continued employment in this position.

POSITION:     PROGRAM MANAGER/RE-ENTRY – (1 Opening)  ANNUAL SALARY:  $52,603.20 – 81,016.00;  BI-WEEKLY:  $2,023.20 – $3,116.00     Parks & Neighborhoods/Re-Entry          J.O. #13-209 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:  Work under the general direction of the Administrator of the Office of Re-Entry to manage, and implement programs and services for the offender/felon population of citizens in Memphis. Maintains a safe, secure, work environment while developing personal growth opportunities. Trains new staff, supervises direct reporting staff according to overall office/program policy and procedure, sets employee goals and objectives, and develops staff to maximize potential. Monitors staff performance including performance reviews, delegates work duties to staff, coordinates use of available resources, and monitors and assists staff with work progress. Evaluates current business processes and systems, develops, plans and implements procedures and systems to maximize operating efficiency, establishes and maintains controls and participates in the development of office policies and practices. Monitors budget activities for maximum operational efficiency. Collects, reviews, monitors, and manages performance data and activity reports to measure productivity, goal progress and activity levels. Facilitates the preparation of stakeholder reports tracking the office/programs productivity and goal achievement of deliverables using appropriate tools.  Performs scheduling and other protocol duties. Travels to various locations to attend program activities, including attending weekly meetings within the city limits (organizational partners and stakeholder groups) as well as out of town meetings and conferences with state and federal agencies.

 TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in an office environment and requires travel to attend various meetings, conferences/seminars, community initiatives and other facilities. Requires occasional travel within city limits and quarterly outside of the city limits. Requires the ability to work flexible hours including possible nights, weekends and holidays.   

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Business, Management, Psychology or related field and six (6) years of professional experience coordinating programs related to employment services/workforce development with four (4) of the six (6) years in a lead/supervisory capacity; or any combination of experience and training which enables one to perform the essential job functions. Experience in people management, strategic planning, risk and change management; as well as competencies in critical thinking, problem solving skills, decision-making, judgment, delegation, conflict management, adaptability, motivating staff, and stress tolerance are strongly preferred. Master’s degree preferred.
