High school student graduation is a major milestone on a youth’s path to successful adulthood and is the single most powerful predictor of whether a young person coming out of generations of poverty will break the cycle. Memphis graduation rates are low. In 2011, the Memphis City Schools graduation rate was 72.6 %, a 1.8% increase from 2010. While this was a slight increase, the State goal is for all Tennessee School Systems to have a 90% graduation rate by 2014 – a tremendous challenge. There are numerous factors that contribute to a high dropout rate and poor academic performance in the Memphis, TN region including high rates of poverty, lack of quality early childhood experiences, deficiencies in early reading and math skills, school disciplinary issues and high teen pregnancy rates. 85.1% of the students in the Memphis City Schools district in 2012 were classified as economically disadvantaged and 94.0 % were Title I eligible (considered low income with students getting free and reduced breakfast and lunch). There is no single solution to increasing high school graduation rates – it involves action on numerous fronts. Therefore, the mandate is everyone working together collectively as a community, in order to change the life course for our children. The goal of the SUCCESS High School Initiative is to infuse 400 executives over five years into eight high schools to increase the post-secondary continuation rate of 7,000 students. The Leadership Club and the Graduation Advisory Program (GAP) are the primary components of this initiative.

Member Duties : Three (3) VISTAs will assist with identifying resources that provide support and opportunities for students in five key indicator areas. An electronic directory of resources will be compiled and used as a reference for the school administration, parents, and volunteers; Using the Collective Impact model developed by STRIVE, build a resource platform in each of the eight neighborhood high schools by engaging existing partners and identifying new partnerships and resources that will align to ensure long-term sustainability of the Initiative beyond the five-year period; increase student achievement by expanding parent and family knowledge of graduation success strategies, knowledge of post-secondary education and career options, preparation and financing; and evaluate the five-year outcomes of the participants in the Leadership Clubs around the five leading indicators and the participants in the Graduation Advisory Program.

DUTIES: This position is in the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department, Naval Support Activity Midsouth. The incumbent is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Eagles Peak Grill and Bar under the direct supervision of the Golf Course Program Manager. Plans, directs and supervises the restaurant and bar operation. Interfaces with the Golf Course Program Manager in planning menus, special events, programs and internal controls necessary for a viable and successful operation. Incumbent works with the MWR Catering Department in matters involving catered functions. Incumbent will be scheduled to perform certain job functions, i.e. bartender, food preparation, etc., during peak times or during staffing shortages. Hires, trains and motivates employees for a quality food and beverage operation. Provides on the job training in employee work assignments. Prepares work schedules for employees supervised. Responsible on a day-to-day basis for food and bar controls and managing operational costs. Incumbent is responsible for the proper relation of cost of goods to labor, food waste, and spoilage. Determines food and beverage requirements and related supplies. Develops and maintains standardized recipes. Inspects deliveries for quality and quantity. Accountable for food and beverage equipment and supplies. Responsible for sanitation and health inspection standards. Receives complaints from customers and/or subordinates relative to the quality, quantity and/or preparation and service provided by employees. Performs other duties assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of management procedures and general business practices related to the operational management of food and beverage programs, and effective utilization of restaurant/bar facilities and equipment. Incumbent must know proper menu and recipe preparation. The ability to work long and unusual hours is required. Standing, walking and lifting cases of product is required. Incumbent required to work in kitchens, freezers, coolers, behind bar and outdoors. Completion of National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) is required.
