JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Program Director is responsible for the advancement of Leadership Memphis mission through peak experiences for participants by providing thought-provoking content and teaching high-impact and action-oriented community leadership skills. This will include high level research, planning, implementation and evaluation of Leadership Memphis programs and program functions.

This position reports to the Senior Director of Operations.

The Program Director will produce and provide organizational supervision over annual program curriculum that advance a culture and create an ecosystem of community leadership, prepare and connect community leaders to drive collective impact, and foster and support diversity and equity in every aspect of our community. The Program Director will manage Leadership Memphis Core Programs that annually serves nearly 200 community leaders (Executive Program, FastTrack, and Grassroots). The Program Director will provide support for the American Leadership Forum (ALF) Criminal Justice Program.

The Program Director must provide direction, goal setting and oversight of staff: Program Coordinator and other future coordinator positions; program faculty, vendors: guest faculty site venues; and caterers, etc. The director is responsible for effectively recommending the recruitment, hiring, supervision and firing of aforementioned staff, guest faculty, vendors and volunteers.  The Program Director is expected to maintain professional relationships and hold to the highest of academic standards everyone who is involved with the planning and delivery of all Leadership Memphis programs.

Position summary

The COOL program promotes and supports higher education attainment for first-generation, low-income students of average academic performance. The higher education coordinator is responsible for the daily functions of the in-school program for 11th and 12th grade students.  This includes participant recruitment, selection, and retention in the program; development and implementation of a higher education attainment curriculum; and database management of student records including academic progress and evaluation.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree required (social services, social work, education or a closely related field)
  2. In-depth knowledge of higher education system and admissions
  3. Strong and proven background in the financial aid process and scholarship applications
  4. Must be a self-starter with proven project development experience
  5. Three years of experience in customer service, preferably in social services or education
  6. Must have excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills and be able to relate and respond to teens
  7. Ability to build relationships and effectively track volunteers
  8. Proficient operating communication systems (computers, email, laptops, telephone, faxes, scanners, and presentation equipment), Microsoft Office, and various database systems
  9. Flexible hours, evenings, some weekends, and some travel required
  10. Transportation and insurance required

Major responsibilities and related tasks

Supervise classes to ensure student performance and success in attaining higher education

  • Maintain a student case load of at least 100 students per year
  • Recruit students; encourage participation and maintain enrollment
  • Develop appropriate grade-level higher education attainment curriculum
  • Conduct weekly higher education attainment classes, utilizing staff and volunteers to  present specific college readiness information
  • Conduct mandatory weekly one-on-one and/or small group meetings with each 12th grade student to track college/higher education enrollment progress; provide encouragement, and deal with any issues or challenges
  • Coordinate ACT preparation and testing sessions
  • Maintain contact with various organizations/corporations for career learning opportunities (i.e. internships or summer jobs)
  • Conduct quarterly meetings with parents; provide program updates, and encourage active support of their student’s higher education goals
  • Maintain accurate records and/files and databases of each student for

Coordinate college tours, career learning opportunities, and field trips to present students with the opportunity to experience college environments and make career choices

  • Contact local, state, and out-of-state colleges and universities to schedule various campus tours
  • Book hotel rooms and make room assignments
  • Make appropriate travel arrangements for each tour
  • Schedule campus events during tours

Coordinate and facilitate the mentoring component through the recruitment, screening, training and partnering of volunteers and for-profit/nonprofit partners with students to provide career learning opportunities

  • Recruit and appropriately screen adult mentors and career coaches
  • Conduct mentor orientation and continuous training
  • Coordinate all mentor/mentee events

Manage timely compliance of all training and development opportunities, performance reviews, and trial evaluations.

  1. Coordinate and source ongoing annual trainings for MIFA staff
  2. Coordinate timely facilitation of 90-day onboarding trial reviews  and benefit orientations
  3. Manage compliance, and support the training and completions of MIFA’s annual performance review process
  4. Coordinate trainings for local, state and federal grant compliance
  5. Monitor programs and individualized request for specific training requirements

Manage MIFA’s hiring process by facilitating the interview selection form process, judging appropriate recruitment methods, responding promptly to applicants, and effectively screening and disseminating applications.

  2. Monitor for compliance and coordinate new employee orientations and trial reviews.
  3. Manage exit process by coordinating exit interviews, separation notices, and COBRA processing

 

Promote and engage monthly employee relations activities.

  1. Manage timely monthly nominations for the Richard Reinhart All-Star recognition program by notifying winners and monitoring effectiveness
  2. Coordinate, assess, and lead annual and ongoing employee relations activities with the Fun at Work committee
  3. Lead the coordination of monthly birthday notices, retirement celebrations, and quarterly gatherings
  4. Maintain a cooperative relationship with staff

Other responsibilities

  1. Manage the FMLA/LWOP/Workman’s Comp process, ensuring employees appropriately exit, respond, and reenter the system.
  2. Serve as benefit liaison by facilitating the enrollment of employees in insurance programs and assisting employees in obtaining accurate information about their fringe benefits.
  3. Oversee employee records in compliance with funding sources and ensure appropriate staff files are audit–compliant.
  4. Assist VP of Human Resources in all areas of administration.
  5. Coordinate billing processes and manage the HR employment schedule

MPLOY Youth Summer Experience Application

The Office of Youth Services (OYS) welcomes Memphis youth, ages 14-21 to apply for the MPLOY Youth Summer Experience. Only online applications will be accepted.

Qualifications

Each successful applicant for the MPLOY Youth Summer Experience must:

  • Complete online application during the application period (between March 4 – April 4)
  • Must Attend a Youth Empowerment Symposium (register here)
  • Be a resident of the city of Memphis
  • Must be ages 14-21 (Must be age 14 by May 1, 2015/Cannot be age 22 by July 24)
  • Must have ability to work in a team environment as well as independently

Evaluation Criteria and Process

Following the application period, a random computer-based lottery process selects applicants by City Council Districts. Those applicants are given ranks. The applicants with the highest ranking in their districts are invited to participate in interviews. During the interview the applicant (along with a parent) provides proof of residency, signs a program commitment letter and completes the registration information needed.
