Summer Lifeguard – City of Memphis

In addition to filling out the Application, ALL Interested Candidates Must attend a required ‘Screening & Qualifying Session’ – Monday, March 21, 2016 – Friday, March 25, 2016 (MANDATORY ALL 5 DAYS) from 9:00am – 5:00pm at the Bickford Aquatic Center, at 235 Henry Ave., Memphis, TN. Must be present and on time each day.

JOB TITLE:  Lifeguard

DEPARTMENT:  Recreation Services – Aquatics Dept.

SALARY:  $12.00 per hour, minimum

CERTIFICATION: Applicants must have a valid Lifeguard Certification before being hired.

Capable/Experienced candidates may obtain the certification during our on-site certifying session, March 21, 2016 – March 25, 2016 from 9:00am – 5:00pm at the Bickford Aquatic Center. There is a $65.00 non-refundable training fee that will be accepted once you pass the Pre-Course Requirements. Money Orders/Cashier Checks are the only accepted methods of payment and should be made payable to the City of Memphis.

Applicants must pass American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course Prerequisites: 1). Swim 300 yards continuously using 100 yards freestyle, 100 yards breaststroke and 100 yards choice stroke.  2). Starting in the water , swim 20 yards, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound rubber brick, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the brick within 1 minute, 40 seconds.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:  This position works under the supervision of the Head Lifeguard and Pool Manager, and is responsible for ensuring the safety of ALL patrons attending the City’s swimming pools and aquatics facilities. The job includes rendering water safety and rescue support to patrons/customers, provides aquatic water instruction/safety/teaching/coaching in support of various on-site events, provides light clerical and building custodial support.  Must comply with job and operational guidelines presented during a required training orientation class.  May be required to supervise some staff and/or participants, and may direct facility operations in the absence of management. Other functions include; performs pool preparation support, in pre/post seasonal planning and facility readiness activities; assist in supporting staff at various assigned pool sites, and in deployment of supplies/equipment as needed.


  • Must be able to communicate both written and verbal
  • Must be able to perform all required swimming regiments necessary to obtain/retain Lifeguard Certification, and perform effectively on the job

STATUS: Full-Time

HOURS: 40 Hours per week


General Purpose of Position:

Provides case management services to parents with children between the ages of newborn (0) and five (5).


  • Should have a thorough knowledge of Compassionate Ministries’ departmental policies and procedure manual.
  • Should exhibit a pleasant demeanor with neighbors, agency representatives and staff when performing daily tasks.
  • Conduct comprehensive social and economic well-being assessments for each parent/care-giver.
  • In conjunction with parent/care-giver, develop an individual action plan for improving the quality of life for self and children.
  • Monitors, tracks & documents parent/care-giver’s progress in achieving goals.
  • Reviews action plans with parent/care-givers at least every 30 days or as needed.
  • Updates and ensures logs and database are current and accurate.
  • Works with local service delivery network to make service referrals
  • Develop collaborative relationships with community based organizations and agencies that provide support services, and resources.
  • Reviews and provides program and client specific summary reports for management review
  • Performs any other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Aptitudes:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or equivalent with one year or more year’s social services experience.
  • Organization and time management skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to motivate clients to take action
  • Ability to understand multi-step written and oral procedures/instructions
  • Adherence to NCC policies/procedures, including safety practices
  • Ability to demonstrate intermediate knowledge and use of MS Office Suite (WORD, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Interest in and the ability to articulate the NCC Statement of Faith, Mission and Values
  • Valid Tennessee driver’s license and insurance
