The Virtuous Beason Association (VBA) is a 501(c) 3 organization that serves as a certified intermediary for the U.S. Department of Labor.   VBA is a community service organization that provides high quality training to individuals interested in a career within the Medical Machining industry.  We provide participants with job readiness skills that are industry specific and employability skills that are transferrable to any industry.

Training Type : Machine Technology Training Program


Training Days and Hours

Wednesdays   6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.

Saturdays      10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.


This program will provide basic knowledge of machining and machine shop practices. This program offers a great opportunity for an entry level placement into the Medical Machining industry.  The classroom training is designed to provide competency that leads to development as a skilled craftsman: CNC Machinist Operator, CNC Set-up Operators, and Machinists.

Additional Training Information

  • 6- Week intensive program that will provide basic knowledge of machine shop tools, and machine operation.
  • Classroom instructions under the guidance of skilled machinists and subject matter experts.
  • Hands-on training focused on achieving NIMS machining entry level credentialing.
  • Trained to be committed to a high standard of safety and able to comply with all safety laws regulated by OSHA safety policies and standards; will be able to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel.
  • Skills and knowledge development to make appropriate progress necessary to build basic knowledge and skill set required to pass the U.S. Department of Labor certification examinations.
  • Skills and training to meet the minimum requirements to be “Program Ready” to start the registered apprenticeship program.
  • Upon completion of the training program and passing a skill mastery test with 80% or higher proficiency, participants will be interviewed for job placement and admittance into a U.S. Department of Labor certified registered apprenticeship program.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum age 16 to participate, must be 18 prior to being indentured
  • Valid state/federal issued ID
  • Drug free (Mandatory random drug testing)
  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to follow oral and written directions
  • Good problem solving skills to make effective and reasonable decisions under pressure
  • Must be able to manage and resolve conflicts
  • Math Proficiency Preferred

Job Description:

Do you have a passion for bicycling, transit and walking? Do you enjoy encouraging others to take healthy, environmentally friendly transportation choices? Innovate Memphis is hiring 2-3 Commute Options Ambassadors to talk about transportation choices at worksites and around Memphis. Ambassadors will work as a team to increase transit use, bicycling, vanpool and walking to work and school. The project is funded with a Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality

(CMAQ) grant for 18-24 months. The goal is to reduce people driving alone to work. The Commute Options Ambassadors will provide outreach and  communications on Commute Options Travel Demand Management (TDM) Initiative programs. The Ambassadors will talk to employers and commuters about transportation choices, answer their questions, organize events and promotions, and distribute informational materials. Ambassadors will work as a team and independently under direction of the Commute Options Manager and Transportation and Mobility Project Manager. Ideal candidates are responsible, friendly and outgoing self-starters who have a desire to help their community.

Hours include some evenings and weekends, working indoors and outdoors (in various weather), and a combination of office tasks, outreach and events.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to, the following:

  • Schedule events and engagement opportunities for Commute Options with employers, staff, business associations, community organizations, volunteers, and other organizations and agencies.
  • Make presentations at events and workshops, in formal and informal settings.
  • Lead physical activities such as bike rides, walks, and trips by transit.
  • Attend community events and fairs to promote transportation choices.
  • Engage people from diverse backgrounds, including different cultural backgrounds, income levels, education levels, and types of jobs.
  • Maintain relationships with community and stakeholder groups.
  • Propose ideas about how to get more people taking transit, walking and bicycling.
  • Provide customer service; promptly respond to inquiries and resolve concerns.
  • While on duty, wear a Commute Options uniform (provided by the program) and a bicycling helmet when bicycling to and from events.
  • Represent Innovate Memphis and the Commute Options program in a positive, responsible, professional manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Have familiarity and personal experience with using Memphis transit, including some knowledge of routes, schedules, and TransLoc Rider app
  • Have familiarity and personal experience with using other transportation options including walking, bicycling, and car-share (like Zipcar)
  • Have experience bicycling in urban traffic and own a bicycle in good working condition

Desirable Skills, Experience and Knowledge

  • Be proficient in a language other than English (desirable)
  • Be proficient with Microsoft Office applications and basic data entry and email
  • Be familiar with social media
  • Have bicycle mechanic skills (desirable)
  • Be able to lift up to 35 pounds, and able to work outdoors all day and in any weather
  • Own an approved bicycling helmet (helmet can be provided)

Salary: Hourly at $12/hour, depending on experience, plus benefits package. Two positions available at 25 to 35 hours per week.

CNI Project Manager – Memphis Housing Authority

POSITION:     CNI Project Manager (Grant Funded/Durational)


REPORTS TO:  Executive Director

FLSA:  Exempt

Position Summary:  Will provide a wide range of services in support of the day to day management of the South City (SC) Choice Neighborhoods Implementation Program.  The Transformation Plan is primarily funded under HUD’s Choice Neighborhood Initiative (CNI) for the transformation of the Foote Homes public housing development and surrounding neighborhood.


  • Collaborate with the Director of Special Projects and the Executive Director. Organizes, plans, develops and implements a comprehensive plan to manage the project scope, schedules, and budget for a delivery of successful program goals;
  • Engage in regular communication and coordination of CNI activities with the City of Memphis Division of Housing and Community Development’s liaison to the project;
  • Develop detailed work plans and program budgets, including identifying and utilizing outside funding sources to implement program objectives consistent with the Choice Neighborhood Grant. Report on progress toward meeting work plan goals and budget;
  • Provide day to day supervision of the SC Implementation Working Team to ensure that all phases of the work are on schedule and within budget and all leveraged resources are used effectively and efficiently;
  • Serve in an advisory capacity to staff and other officials on matters pertaining to the community redevelopment initiative.
  • Provides assistance in scope and budget development ensuring appropriate critical elements of such documents conform to standard guidelines and receive the appropriate levels of review.
  • Works closely with the developers, contractors, and other partners to ensure compliance with policies and other regulatory procedures
  • Represents MHA in the community on a daily basis addressing stakeholder concerns and resolving issues as they arise
  • Attend community, special interest group/stakeholder concerns and resolving issues as they arise,
  • Coordinate with other neighborhood planning efforts; attend relevant City Council and Committee meetings; and Executive Committee meetings as requested or appropriate.
  • Work extensively with community-based organizations, stakeholders, public and private partners and philanthropic organizations, to strategically coordinate the investments in South City
  • Engage, serve as a point of contact and manage all third party professional consultants engaged in various aspects of the CNI,
  • Coordinate the services and activities of key implementation entities as the impact the neighborhood in an effort to efficiently and effectively advance revitalization efforts.
  • Through collaboration with key partners, ensure that CNI’s active projects are being implemented in a timely manner, meet CNI program and partner requirements and ensure adherence to all agreements.
  • Anticipate potential challenges in the execution of the CNI activities and prepares and executes alternative plan to ensure the agreed upon program outcomes are achieved.
  • Collect and analyze data for planning, tracking and ongoing improvement of the South City neighborhood and for the coordinating data collection with other key partners involved with the Transformation Plan
  • Ensure contract compliance with all HUD, Federal, State, and Local Government laws, regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Perform other job related tasks and duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:  Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Urban Affairs, Urban Planning, Public Administration, Real Estate Development or related area of study with a minimum of five (5) years of related work experience. Proficiency in community redevelopment and cultivating public private partnerships; Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills; ability to cultivate and maintain effective relationships with government, business, political and community leaders; Proven ability to work effectively with a diverse group of individuals from various racial, cultural, ethnic backgrounds, Ability to manage a high workload, multiple projects, and competing priorities, Strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and an ability to work well under pressure, High ethical standards and values, Knowledge of local, state and national policies, issues and best practices regarding community re-development and affordable housing; Ability to gather, analyze and synthesize data; Strong computer skills; demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook and other software programs.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

The primary work performed will include making routine visits to an active construction site to attend weekly construction meetings, to monitor the progress of the physical redevelopment activities and attend other team meetings.  Will require walking, standing and must be able to lift and or move up to 20 pounds.
