Job Description Summary

This position is designed to engage one-on-one with people with disabilities to develop and maintain their skills necessary to live independently in the community. The ILS will systematically and completely report on the work done with consumers and the community.

The Independent Living Specialist (ILS) is a full-time position that will focus on peer counseling, referrals and teaching. The ILS will assist with independent living goals of personal hygiene, food and meal preparation, home upkeep, money management, accessing and using community resources, community mobility, parenting, computer use and any reasonable independent living goal the consumer creates. The ILS will assist consumers to self-assess their priorities, needs, resources and current independent living skills. This position will encourage empowerment with self and system advocacy to accomplish inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of civic life.

Essential Functions:

  • Ensure the philosophy, mission and goals of the independent living program are maintained.
  • Document all public and consumer interactions.
  • Participate in the MCIL Work Plan to develop opportunities in housing, transportation, healthcare, assistive technology, community access and MCIL development.
  •  Have a working knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Rehabilitation Act, and Fair Housing.
  • Provide persons with disability awareness and community education through one-on-one interaction, networking events, focus groups, community events and educational sessions.
  • Assist consumers in developing short and long term goals to achieve an Independent Living goal.
  • Provide peer counseling, encouragement, information and follow-up.
  • Educate the communities in our region through presentations on disability awareness and etiquette, federal laws, pending legislation, and other IL issues.
  •  Keep staff and consumers informed on national, state and local issues that impact people with disabilities.
  • Use Internet tools to advance the mission of MCIL and keep consumers and the community informed.
  • Other duties and assignments on request.

Additional Duties:

  • Understand, model and implement The Memphis Center for Independent Living philosophy, vision and mission.
  • Attendance at staff meeting, engage in training for the purpose of better understanding of the position as well as for staff development.
  • Be a self-starter who is productive and proactive as well as work in conjunction with community members across our regional assignment to assess and build more accessible communities and services.
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as deemed necessary.
  • Set clear expectations, responsibilities and goals with consumers.
  • Maintain confidentiality as outlined in the employee handbook.
  • Accepts responsibility for personal and professional development.

Education and Work Experience

The ideal candidate will have personal experience with disability and the disability community. Bachelor’s Degree preferred. The ILS shall be an Independent Living professional with one year or more experience in providing functionally based assessment and skills training of individuals with disabilities.


Must possess professional skills. Must possess analytical and problem solving skills. Must have the ability to communicate concisely, both orally and in writing. Must be able to develop procedures for work activities and carry work through to completion with initiative and minimal supervision. Must have the ability to exercise individual initiative and discretion in confidential matters and to respect confidential matters regarding clients and other employees. The ILS must have computer skills.

The ILS will be required to attend events in the community and must have solid transportation skills and personal organization to best use office and transportation time for the benefit of MCIL. The ILS is expected to be on time and prepared for each community assignment and consumer meeting.
