Job Title & Description
Maintenance Technician

This Mechanic position is an entry-level position that will assist technicians in preventative maintenance activities. This position will be required to work/train with a senior technician (Tech I or Tech II) who provides opportunities to train in Tech II level responsibilities. Training will include all aspects of maintaining school buses and/or vehicles.  Comply with safety and compliance procedures.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
OPERATIONAL
• Provides assistance to the Maintenance Department and Technicians for assigned bus and/or vehicle repair.
• Works under the direct supervision of the immediate supervisor or Tech I or Tech II to receive hands-on training.
• Maintains a clean and safe work environment and brings any unsafe practices or conditions to the attention of the supervisor.
• Records time and materials used for each assignment.
• Works under the direct supervision of an assigned skilled and certified journeyman technician to receive hands-on training.
• Ensures proper work methods and techniques and ensure compliance with all applicable Federal, State/Provincial and local regulations, requirements, standards and specifications and company policies.
• Ensures the maintenance of a clean, safe, effective and efficient work environment including Identifying and making recommendations to resolve unsafe maintenance conditions or practices.
• Maintains work, time and material and equipment maintenance logs and records for self.
• Prepares, completes and submits paperwork on time and correctly on vehicle maintenance.

CUSTOMER SERVICE
• Under direct supervision of maintenance lead, optimizes maintenance cycle time and ensuring that the shop meets or exceeds customer requirements.

ASSET CONTROL
• Records local maintenance work orders and local parts inventory.
• Complies with parts inventory processes maintained and used in the facility.

QUALITY MANAGEMENT
• Complies with work processes and practices.
• Meets and or exceeds quality maintenance metrics within the shop including quality of repair and shop cleanliness.

KNOWLEDGE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
• Basic computer skills needed in shop environment.
• Knowledge of Shop Management systems.
• Knowledge of and experience using diagnostic technology and related software to access technical information and enter data.
• Basic knowledge of legislation, regulations and standards applicable to the assigned location (e.g. Federal, State, Provincial, local).
• Basic knowledge of practices, techniques, procedures, materials and appropriate use and maintenance of special tools and electronic test equipment commonly used in the diagnosis, repair, preventative maintenance and modification of vehicle maintenance to prescribe procedures, methods and materials to assigned staff on complex repairs/projects.
• Basic knowledge of vehicle components.
• Knowledge of safe work practices, including handling of hazardous materials.

REQUIREMENTS:  EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
• Must be 18 years of age.
• Valid appropriate licenses and/or certification required to operate company vehicles in assigned location must be obtained within 90 days
• High School Diploma (GED equivalent) or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Knowledge of requirements related to safe working practices and conditions and maintenance of a safe work environment.
• Basic knowledge of information technology and software programs to enter data and retrieve work orders.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
• Continuous standing, walking, stooping, squatting, crouching, and kneeling with balance and gross motor coordination to walk, lean and climb on buses and ladders.  Position requires continual bending, gripping, reaching and fine motor coordination to use and manipulate tools and other objects. Position requires frequent pushing and pulling of equipment and tools as well as frequent confined access.
• Frequent lifting and carrying at moderate intensity.
• Exposure to noise, exhaust, humidity, extreme temperatures, vibration, chemicals and sharp objects.
• Exposure to extremes in weather conditions as per the assigned location.
• Exposure to chemicals (e.g. gasoline, coolant, battery acid etc.).
• Working at heights above the ground, exposure to electrical shock and hazardous materials.
• Ability to work after hours, weekends, and holidays as needed
