Bilingual Organizer Job Opening with Workers Interfaith Network

Workers Interfaith Network is hiring!

Monday, December 10, 2012 – Friday, February 15, 2013

Job Title: Memphis Workers’ Center Bilingual Organizer

Reports To: Executive Director

Position Type: Full-Time

Start Date: March 1, 2013

Organization description: Workers Interfaith Network (WIN) unites diverse faith communities with low-wage workers, taking action that advances workers’ rights. Founded in 2002, WIN calls upon core religious values, such as justice, dignity, and respect, in support of workers’ rights to living wages and fair working conditions. By developing leaders and organizing at the grassroots level, WIN shapes local and state policies, partners with workers to recover wages stolen by their employers, and provides faith community support to workers organizing on the job.

WIN launched the Memphis Workers’ Center in 2007 in response to growing violations of workers’ most basic rights to fair pay and safe working conditions. The Workers’ Center educates immigrant and native-born workers about their rights to minimum wage and overtime, workers’ compensation and safe working conditions, and a work environment free from discrimination. Workers who have experienced violations of these rights are encouraged to organize with WIN to claim back pay and other settlements that are owed to them by their employers. The Center also engages workers in WIN’s campaigns for policies to stop wage theft and protect workers’ rights.

Special note about this position: Currently, this position is only guaranteed through the end of 2013. The position may be renewed beyond that time depending on how staff positions are allocated for 2014.

Primary responsibilities:

Case Work

1) Do initial phone intakes with workers, primarily Latino immigrants, who have experienced violations of their workplace rights, including wage theft, injuries, and discrimination.

2) Carry out worker rights cases through regularly meeting with workers and develop action plans with these workers; negotiating with employers; and coordinating public actions when necessary.

3) Oversee the maintenance of records regarding workers who come to the Center.

4) Work with local print, radio, and television media for coverage of cases which have public actions.

Leadership Development

1) Recruit members for Workers’ Center Steering Committee and coordinate their activities;

2) Coordinate quarterly Workers’ Assemblies that strengthen workers’ leadership in the Center and train them on relevant topics.

Education and Outreach

1) Conduct worker rights trainings in English and Spanish, at weekly Thursday night meetings and at outside organizations.

2) Maintain relationships with existing union, faith, legal, and community partners and build new partnerships that further the Center’s work.

3) Translate the organization’s quarterly print newsletter into Spanish for distribution to Workers’ Center members.

4) Write email action alerts for relevant cases.

Fundraising

1) Assist the Steering Committee and executive director with fundraising for the Center’s work, especially through membership recruitment and an annual worker-led fundraising event.

Experience and Qualification Requirements:

Strong candidates will have:

1) At least 1 year of labor, congregation-based, community, and/or immigrant organizing;

2) Demonstrated commitment to building social, economic, and racial justice and progressive social change;

3) Strong written and oral English and Spanish language capabilities;

4) Ability and willingness to work non-traditional hours such as nights and weekends;

5) Reliable transportation;

6) Comfort in working with organized labor and religious communities;

7) High levels of self-motivation and independence, as well as the ability to work as a team;

8) Strong interpersonal and communication skills;

9) Ability to develop innovative strategies and tactics for campaigns;

10) Facility with using common computer software, internet, and email;

11) Good time management skills, including ability to juggle multiple tasks and consistently meet deadlines.

Compensation: $30,000 – $32,000 depending on experience, with excellent benefits package including individual health care, dental, and optical coverage paid fully by organization, 401k, and paid vacation and sick time.

Additional Information: Women, people of color, and immigrants are especially encouraged to apply.

To Apply: Send a cover letter, resume, and three references to Alfredo Pena at alfredo@workersinterfaithnetwork.org (write Workers Center Organizer in the subject line).
