Position: Emergency Shelter Placement Intake Worker

Interview individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, review their housing history, and identify possible barriers to obtaining and retaining housing. Must be patient and caring in dealings with others and possess communication skills, a strong desire to help others, good organization skills, and the ability to manage time effectively. Provides support for the emergency shelter intake coordinator as needed.
- Bachelor’s degree in social sciences from an accredited college or university or a combination of training and experience which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform this job.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of social service case management.
- Knowledge of social service resources and agencies in the community.
- Ability to develop program plans and goals based on client needs.
- Ability to work with the public.
- Ability to interview clients and to obtain pertinent information.
- Ability to prepare and maintain accurate and complete case notes and client records.
- Ability to build and maintain effective and professional working relationships with clients and community agencies, including shelters for the homeless.
- Ability to be flexible and work with a team.
- Ability to work flexible and non-traditional work hours.
- Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office.
- Desire and ability to work with persons in crisis.
- Basic knowledge of public assistance benefits programs and landlord-tenant laws.
- Experience with household budgeting.
- Ability to see both sides in a dispute and to help parties arrive at compromises.
- Ability to remain calm and focused in situations where clients or involved parties may be angry or anxious.
- Ability to interact respectfully with people of diverse ages, races, and household compositions.
Essential functions and responsibilities
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with area homeless shelters, including maintaining a record of available beds, permanent housing units, and admission criteria of individual shelters
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with organizations including Greater Memphis Alliance for the Homeless, Department of Human Services, Memphis and Shelby County police agencies, and other community resources
- Construct and maintain databases to generate statistical reports on homelessness in Memphis and permanent housing units
- Assess families to determine best course of action to help them avoid homelessness and access permanent housing. Develop a plan of action, educate each client, and refer to appropriate housing. Input demographic client data into database to help link families with resources.
- Attend meetings as necessary
- Plan, coordinate, supervise, and evaluate the work of shelter intake staff, instruct on proper procedures for performing work, and recommend hiring and firing of shelter staff to program manager
- Coordinate, supervise, and monitor all case management in compliance with policies and procedures; approve volunteers and supervise their training; conduct client intake
- Inform clients of additional community resources
- Maintain required data on all clients and cases
- Interview applicants to determine eligibility for shelter placement and transitional housing throughout Memphis and Shelby County.
