The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is now taking applications for Reserve Deputy Sheriffs. The next class is scheduled to begin on September 23, 2013. Reserve Deputies serve in several bureaus at various times based on their availability. The officers receive the same training as full-time Deputies. Besides attending classroom courses, Reserve Deputies must meet rigorous physical agility standards, be proficient in the use of firearms, and take 40 hours of specialized training each year.



  • Must have graduated from an accredited high school or GED at the time of application
  • Be at least 21 years-old at the time training begins
  • Pass a written, a physical, and drug test
  • Be a United States citizen
  • Service Requirements: 24 hours/month

A minimum of 500 hours, consisting of three (3) evenings a week from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and eight (8) hours on Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., for a period of approximately 6 months.

MEMPHIS, TN -(WMC-TV) – If you are looking for a new career (or know someone who is) today is your lucky day. The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) is looking to fill dozens of positions. And this could be your chance to start a career earning more than $50,000 a year.

Starting October 3, the THP will be accepting applications online only through next Wednesday, October 10.

In order to apply, you must be at least 21. Additionally, to apply, you must be a US citizen and have a high school diploma or something equivalent.

If you make it past the application phase, you will be required to pass a physical agility test. And if all goes well, you will get an interview.

If you make it through, you could be in the next trooper cadet class that begins March 2013.

Bill Gibbons, Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security Commissioner, says he is expecting 3,000 applicants. Also, the department is working to keep the THP at a full staff of 800 people.

A partnership between the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis, the Memphis Housing Authority and the United Way of the Mid-South led to the creation of RISE in October 1999. With its original mission to help public housing residents achieve financial independence, and on a first year budget of only $22,000, RISE served 48 families and helped them create assets of $83,000.

Since that time, RISE has provided over 450 families with financial information that has assisted them with purchasing their first large assets, encouraged over 500 youth to excel in school, improved the money management skills of over 1,600 area employees, and brought together more than 130 organizations to address predatory lending practices and educate citizens about ways to avoid costly alternative lending traps. To date, RISE’s work has created over $5.9 million in assets in the City of Memphis. Reporting to the President and CEO, the Director of Development serves as a key leadership team member and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting RISE. In partnership with the President and CEO, this position is responsible for all fundraising and marketing activities. The successful candidate will help forge new relationships to build RISE’s visibility, impact, and financial resources. The Director of Development will also design and implement a comprehensive plan for developing key external alliances by cultivating individual and philanthropic support. The Director of Development will have primary responsibility for establishing and implementing the infrastructure needed to grow a $2M budget through the solicitation of major gifts, grants, and corporate support. The Director of Development will expand and diversify RISE’s donor base and work closely with the Board of Directors as they take on a more active fundraising role. It is expected that the amount raised by RISE will increase in future years as the Director of Development systematically and effectively strengthens the organization’s overall fundraising capacity. Additionally, the Director of Development will be responsible for integrating marketing into the development plan supporting the programs and activities of the organization.



Support and partner with the President and CEO and board members on all major fundraising and marketing initiatives.  Meet regularly with the President and CEO to provide leadership on vision and strategy for resource development.  Develop and implement a comprehensive development strategy to include individual, corporate, and foundation support, as well as communications efforts.  Collaborate with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) to develop and implement RISE’s financial and program strategies.  Actively work with board members to engage them in major gift cultivation, solicitation and stewardship efforts. Research funding sources and trends to help position RISE ahead of major funding changes or trends. Monitor all donor information; provide and present statistical analysis to board and senior leaders Develop and implement a stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors.  Monitor and report regularly on the progress of the development program.  Provide supervision of development and marketing support staff.  Perform other duties as assigned.



Five (5) years or more experience in development and marketing.  Proven track record in major gift fundraising.   Excellent interpersonal, as well as written and verbal communication skills.  Demonstrated ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships.  Experience working with boards and senior management.  Self-motivated, strong team player, highly organized, high energy.  Strategic thinker.  Ability to prioritize.  Passion for RISE’s unique mission and work.   Willingness to travel locally.  Willingness to spend the majority of time meeting prospective donors or otherwise building relationships.  Knowledge of marketing and communications.  Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent), CFRE preferred.  Knowledge of traditional fundraising software.  Raiser’s Edge knowledge is a plus.


Compensation:  Commensurate with experience. Base salary $50K-$55K annualized.

RISE Foundation, Inc., a local nonprofit, empowers individuals to build and sustain financial assets.  We are interested in contracting with experienced teachers/trainers to teach basic personal money management skills to adults and youth in group settings.  Classes are scheduled days, evenings and weekends.


  • Excellent oral and written (spelling, punctuation, grammar) communication skills.
  • Degree in Communications, Education, Finance, Training and Development or related field.
  • Minimum two years full-time experience teaching workshops.
  • Experience working with low to moderate-income citizens.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft software applications (PowerPoint, Excel, Word).
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions as needed.

The C-SPAN Bus hits the road for Campaign 2012 tour WASHINGTON (February 1, 2012) – Memphis residents will join the thousands who have toured the C-SPAN Campaign 2012 Bus when it stops in Memphis on Tuesday, February 7, 2012, on its “Road to the White House” tour, named after C-SPAN’s signature political program.

The Campaign 2012 Bus travels the country to promote and enhance C-SPAN’s extensive resources and political coverage by stopping at major political events such as candidate debates and speeches in early primary states and meeting with voters on the campaign trail. Additionally, the Bus will tour state capitals, visit community events, and host students and teachers around the nation, giving them an inside look at C-SPAN’s comprehensive educational and political resources.

“With the presidential campaign heating up, this is a great time for C-SPAN to hit the road with the Campaign 2012 Bus,” said Jennifer Curran. “C-SPAN offers a variety of public affairs programming and resources for educators, students, first-time voters, and the general public. Position Title:  Youth Engagement Specialist – Part-time (20 hours weekly)

Supervised By:  Urban Youth Initiative Executive Director and JustCare Family Network Project Director

Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsible for developing youth-driven programs and activities for youth with Serious Emotional Disturbance diagnosis or who have a family member with mental illness to facilitate their participation in the system of care and to foster leadership abilities in youth. Coordinate with local agencies and organizations to develop appropriate opportunities for enrolled youth and their siblings and establish support mechanisms that enhance their ability to participate.

 Duties Include:

  • Establish relationships with local agencies and organizations that serve youth.
  • Engage youth with SED and their siblings to encourage and facilitate their involvement in the development of an effective system of care.
  • Establish a Youth Council(s) as a part of the system of care structure and provide the appropriate training for leadership development
  • Serve in the JustCare Family Network (JCFN) governing body and appropriate Workgroups
  • Coordinate the development of a plan for involvement of youth.
  • Provide peer support to youth served in the system of care.
  • Help identify Youth Council members to serve on the JCFN Governance structure and appropriate Workgroups
  • Steering Committee or sub-committees and existing community youth councils.
  • Help Youth Council members to identify outreach opportunities in the community to promote system of care and to erase the stigma associated with mental illness.
  • Encourage Youth Council members to think out of the box in order to educate community via the social marketing plan and youth activities\projects.

Qualifications:      High school diploma or equivalent; some college preferred.  Experience with and preference for working with youth with SED.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

Must possess the ability and desire to learn new skills that include cultural competency, and principles of system of care. Must have some leadership experience with youth and knowledge of youth specific issues (development stages, suicidality, peer pressure, etc).



Personal Qualities:

Ability to work well with others, good communication and organizational skills, and value cultural differences. Ability to engage youth and coordinate activities.
