Target Corp. plans to spend $50 million on a new distribution center in Southeast Memphis that will create more than 400 jobs, company and government officials announced Thursday.

Minneapolis-based Target (NYSE: TGT) will open its new online fulfillment center in a 900,000-square-foot industrial building.

Hiring will begin in early 2015, with the center becoming operational by mid-2015, according to the release.

The facility will be managed by third-party vendor Innotrac, and will service the Southeast U.S.

Target chose Memphis after a multi-state search based on its competitive costs, availability of workforce, real estate, local and state support, and accessibility, the release said. As economic development officials pointed out in the release, Tennessee and Memphis have historically been, and still are, strong contenders for distribution projects. Under Armour, for instance, recently selected Mt. Juliet for a massive, $100M distribution facility.
